Legacy old PvP brings 1.8 combat back to modern Minecraft. Spam clicking, sword blocking, 1.8 damage, knockback and armour, all fully configurable. One jar runs on Spigot, Paper and Folia from 1.9 up to 26.3.

Features

Every feature can be turned off, limited to certain worlds, or given a permission.

Feature What it does
Spam clicking No 1.9 attack cooldown. Maces keep theirs; tridents and spears do not.
No sweep attack Sweep damage, particle and sound are all gone, on every version.
No 1.9 attack sounds Hides strong, weak, crit, knockback and no-damage sounds.
1.8 damage Nerfed axes, Sharpness +1.25 per level, 1.8 Strength and Weakness, crits while sprinting.
Sword blocking Right click a sword to block: damage becomes (damage + 1) / 2.
1.8 knockback For players and mobs, from melee hits, projectiles and fishing rods, including sprint hits, Knockback and Punch.
1.8 armour 4% per point with no toughness, and 1.8 Protection maths.
1.8 regeneration 1 health every 4 seconds with 18+ food, no fast saturation healing.
1.8 golden apples The old enchanted apple effects and the 8 gold block recipe.
Old fishing rods Hooks knock players and mobs back and fly like 1.8, without reeling players in.
Projectile knockback Snowballs, eggs and ender pearls push players back.
No ender pearl cooldown Or a custom one.
Crafting and off hand Block crafting certain items (shields by default), or turn the off hand off.
Minigame extras Click bow, click reload crossbow and crossbow insta shot. All off by default.

Sword blocking on every version

  • 1.21.5+ (Paper, Folia, Spigot): the sword itself blocks, using the vanilla blocks_attacks item component. The client shows the 1.8 block pose. No resource pack needed.
  • Older servers: the plugin generates a resource pack that draws a shield as the sword it is hiding. For players who load the pack, a held sword already is that item, so blocking starts and stops instantly on their own client, with no hand animation, exactly like 1.8. Damage, Sharpness, Knockback, durability, Mending and commands such as /enchant all still apply to the real sword.
  • Players without the pack: they get the shield only while blocking, and the sword back the moment they let go.
  • ViaVersion 5 installed: players on 1.21.2+ clients block with the sword itself, no pack involved.

Setup

  1. Drop the jar in plugins/ and restart.
  2. On servers older than 1.21.5, set sword-blocking.disguise.resource-pack.host.public-address in config.yml to the address players connect to, so the built-in host can serve the pack. You can also host the generated sword-blocking-pack.zip anywhere and set resource-pack.url, or merge it into your own server pack.
  3. /legacypvp status shows which features are active, and /legacypvp reload reloads the config. Both need legacypvp.admin.

Bedrock Edition

Go to LegacyOldPvP on CloudBurstMC, and follow the steps written there.

Compatibility

  • Servers: Spigot, Paper, Folia and forks, 1.9 through 26.3.
  • Clients: any version the server accepts, including modern clients through ViaVersion or ViaProxy.
  • Tested: bots run the full combat suite on Paper 1.9.4, 1.12.2, 1.16.5, 1.17.1, 1.20.4, 1.21.4 and 26.1, Spigot 1.20.4 and 26.1.2, Folia 26.1, and a ViaVersion setup, including a run with 150 ms of latency. Paper 1.9.4 and 1.20.4, Spigot 1.9.4 and 26.2, Folia 26.2 and Paper 26.3 were also played by hand.

Known limits

  • On 1.9 to 1.11.1 there is no API to clear the ender pearl cooldown, and on 1.9 and 1.10 fishing hooks cannot report what they hit, so those parts are skipped there.
  • On servers older than 1.21.5, a held sword is a shield to the server while the pack disguise is active, so other plugins that read the held item may see a shield. Commands the player runs, and the commands listed in disguise.real-sword-commands, always get the real sword. Setting disguise.hold: false limits the disguise to the moments a player is blocking.
