Lively Bends

Lively Bends is a Fabric mod that makes player movement in Minecraft feel more lively, smooth, and expressive while preserving the game's recognizable visual style.

The project is inspired by the legendary Mo' Bends, which transformed Minecraft animations with bending limbs and more natural full-body movement. Unfortunately, the original mod has not supported modern versions of the game for a long time.

That's why Lively Bends was created.

What does Lively Bends change?

The mod reworks the player's core animations, including:

• walking;
• sprinting;
• sneaking and crouched movement;
• jumping and airborne movement;
• swimming;
• flying;
• combat and weapon animations.

One of its main features is bending arms and legs. Movement affects not only the limbs, but also the torso and other parts of the player model, making the character feel significantly more alive.

Special attention is given to smooth transitions between states. Walking shouldn't instantly snap into running, and landing, jumping, or switching poses shouldn't cause parts of the player model to suddenly "teleport" into a new position.

Compatibility with modern Minecraft

One of the main challenges in developing Lively Bends is supporting mechanics that didn't exist when the original Mo' Bends was created.

We paid particular attention to items that have their own unique animations.

For example, the spear in Minecraft 26.2 has a special sequence of movements while being prepared and used. Lively Bends takes these states into account so that its new body animations don't break the vanilla behavior or positioning of the weapon.

A similar approach is used for the trident and other situations where Minecraft needs to retain control over specific parts of the player model.

The goal of Lively Bends is therefore not simply to replace as many vanilla animations as possible, but to carefully extend them.

A modern continuation of the Mo' Bends idea

We initially considered bringing the old Mo' Bends directly to modern Minecraft. However, the game and its rendering systems have changed so much over the years that a straightforward port proved impractical.

Instead of literally porting the old mod, Lively Bends develops its core concept with modern versions of Minecraft and Fabric in mind.

This is not an official port of Mo' Bends, nor an attempt to completely replicate it. It is a modern take on the same idea: the player should feel like a single moving body rather than a collection of rigid cubes.

How is Lively Bends different from Mo' Bends?

Mo' Bends is the main inspiration behind the project, but Lively Bends is being developed for a completely different generation of Minecraft.

We aim to preserve what players loved about the original concept: bending limbs, expressive walking and running animations, full-body movement, and the feeling of a much more lively character.

At the same time, the system is adapted for modern Minecraft, Fabric, new items, and the game's changed rendering systems.

For this reason, Lively Bends is best described as a spiritual successor to Mo' Bends for modern versions of Minecraft, rather than a direct port.

Project goal

We want to preserve Minecraft's distinctive blocky style while reducing the overly rigid feeling of the vanilla player model.

Lively Bends isn't trying to turn Minecraft movement into realistic motion capture. The animations should still feel like they belong in Minecraft — just significantly smoother, more expressive, and more alive.

The project is still actively evolving, so new animations, improvements to existing movements, and compatibility fixes will be added as development continues.
