Train 19 RPG skills, find your specializations, and work together!
mcRPG is a skills plugin built on mcMMO. Mining, chopping trees, fighting, farming, fishing and brewing each train their own skill, and higher levels make the skill stronger and unlock new abilities. The difference is that every player picks two Specializations: whole categories of skills that level much faster than the rest. What you pick decides what you're good at, so players end up trading with and relying on each other.
Warnings:
Beta: 0.5.0 is the first beta, currently being played on a small server with friends. Expect bugs, and please report them.
Compatibility: The plugin has only been tested on Paper 26.3 -- it could work on older versions, but I do not have the time/testers to trial and error other versions.
Specializations
Pick a Primary and a Secondary category with /specialization (or /csp). The menu shows your levels in every category. Left-click a category to make it your Primary, right-click for your Secondary, then confirm.
| Your skill is in... | XP rate |
|---|---|
| Your Primary Specialization | 1.25× |
| Your Secondary Specialization | 1.0× |
| Anything else | 0.35× |
A Primary skill levels about 3.6 times faster than a skill you haven't specialized in. You can still train everything, and a skill's abilities depend only on its level, so a skill outside your Specializations works normally. It just takes much longer to level. This--in theory--encourages players to work together and find their own niche.
Your choices stick. The only way to change a Specialization is to abandon it with /abandonspecialization (/asp), and every skill in that category keeps only 10% of its XP. A level 100 skill drops to 28. You have to confirm before it goes through.
Six categories
| Category | Skills | Passive |
|---|---|---|
| Melee Combat | Swords, Axes, Maces, Spears | None |
| Ranged Combat | Archery, Crossbows, Tridents | None |
| Metallurgy | Mining, Smelting, Excavation | Copper Mastery |
| Botany | Woodcutting, Herbalism, Alchemy | Wooden Mastery |
| Blacksmithing | Repair, Salvage | Chainmail Mastery |
| Survivalism | Taming, Acrobatics, Fishing, Unarmed | Leather Mastery |
Category passives
Specialize in one of four categories and get its skills to 25 levels combined to unlock a unique bonus:
- Leather Mastery (Survivalism): full leather armor protects a bit better than iron.
- Chainmail Mastery (Blacksmithing): full chainmail protects a bit better than diamond, but not as well as netherite.
- Copper Mastery (Metallurgy): full copper armor protects as well as iron.
- Wooden Mastery (Botany): wooden tools break blocks 50% faster.
Mastered gear also wears out half as fast. Each armor piece counts on its own, so you can mix sets.
Smelting and Salvage are full skills
In mcMMO, these two got their levels from other skills. In mcRPG they earn their own XP, have their own leaderboards, count toward your Power Level, and can be part of your Specializations.
- Smelting levels when furnaces you own smelt ore.
- Salvage levels when you salvage worn-down gear, or enchanted gear you found in chests, while fishing, or from mobs. Salvage Mastery gives back more materials from damaged gear as you level, and any level can salvage diamond and netherite gear.
A menu for every skill
/skills lists every skill with your level, your XP, how fast you're leveling it and what earns XP. Click a skill to see all of its abilities, when each one unlocks, and its guide.
Everything else works like mcMMO
mcRPG follows mcMMO's development branch and pulls in its updates, so the rest works the way mcMMO players expect: super abilities like Super Breaker, Tree Feller and Berserk, Blast Mining, Limit Break, Excavation and Fishing treasures, wolves that fight for you, leaderboards, and protection against XP farming (placed blocks and spawner mobs give no XP).
Removed from mcMMO
- Parties: no party chat, teleports, alliances, or shared XP and loot.
- Chat channels: no admin chat or chat spying.
- XP boosts: no XP perks and no
/xprateevents. Specializations are the only thing that changes how fast you level. - RetroMode: skills use the 0–100 level scale.
- Usage statistics: no bStats.

For server owners
- Built for and tested on Paper 26.3. Other versions may work, but use them at your own risk. mcRPG needs Java 17 or newer.
- Don't run it alongside mcMMO. They'd both apply their skills to everything players do.
- Everyone starts fresh. mcRPG uses its own plugin folder, data file, database tables and block tracking, so it never touches mcMMO's data, but it can't import it either.
- Everything is configurable: the XP multipliers, how much XP abandoning keeps, the passive bonuses and more are in
config.ymlandexperience.yml. Restart after changing a config file;/reloadisn't supported. - Storage: FlatFile by default, or MySQL for bigger servers.
- Optional: PlaceholderAPI (
%mcrpg_...%placeholders, including each player's Specializations) and WorldGuard (mcrpg,mcrpg-xpandmcrpg-hardcoreflags).
See Server Setup for every config file and setting.
